The temple is the main centre of cult of the Most Blessed Heart of Jesus in Poland. It was built by the Jesuits in the years 1909-1912.
The modernist Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Jesuits, with the huge steeple (70 m) was designed by Franciszek Mączyński. Inside, there are the works by outstanding artists, inter alia, X. Dunikowski (statue of Christ) or J. Bukowski (ornamental secession polychrome). Above the altar, there is the mosaic frieze designed by P. Stachowicz, which shows the homage paid by the Polish Saints, the Blessed and the nation to the Most Holy Heart of Jesus. On the rood beam, there is the wooden crucifix surrounded by the Mother of God and St. John.
